The Forest Glade nature trail is a fun activity to enjoy with your family during a stay at our holiday park in Devon. Pop into reception to pick up a leaflet to discover everything you're likely to see along the route.

We highly recommend completing the nature trail during a stay at Forest Glade. Explore the natural beauty which surrounds us here at Forest Glade and learn more about the habitats that flourish in our quiet corner of the Devon countryside. While away a couple of hours with your loved ones as you explore hidden areas of our caravan and camping park and neighbouring forest. There is plenty of amazing wildlife and plants to discover in our grounds and beyond. See how many you can spot along the route.

 

The route

  1. Pop into reception and pick up and pick up a nature trail leaflet
  2. Start the nature trail in the Five Acre field
  3. Follow the track down the side of the field until you reach the tap
  4. Turn right and go over the bank into the Christmas trees
  5. Turn right and then turn left and go down through the Christmas Tree Field and into the woodland beyond

Plants on the nature trail

There are over four-hundred different species of flowering plants that grow here in Devon. Below we have listed a small selection of the flora and fauna that you may be lucky enough to find whilst completing our nature trail.

Ferns

Ferns are some of the most widespread and ancient plants that grow across the world – you will find various species of ferns thriving in the woodlands that surround our caravan park. Some of the most popular fern species include ‘Scaly Male Fern’, ‘Hard Fern’, ‘Hart’s Tongue Fern’ and ‘Bracken’.

Bluebells

Bluebells are a beautiful flower that emerges in the Spring, between the months of April – May. Did you know that bluebells almost entirely exclusively grow in the UK? You will find a carpet of bluebells growing in the woodlands and forests near Forest Glade.

Foxgloves

Foxgloves are a native British flower that begins appearing throughout the warmer months between June to September. These pink-purple flowers are extremely beautiful and well worth a photograph!

Buddleia Bushes

You will find a beautiful Buddleia Bushes near the tennis court on our holiday park. These amazing deep purple plants attract plenty of butterflies – how many kinds of butterflies can you count?

Animals on the nature trail

Devon is home to a wide range of wildlife, many of which can be spotted on the nature trail around Forest Glade.  Keep your eyes peeled as you walk around our site – it’s possible to spot insects, birds, butterflies bees and even deer if you’re quiet enough!

Dragonflies

If you walk over to the pond near the tennis court, you are sure to find plenty of amazing insects! One of the most impressive insects is the mighty dragonfly. When the dragonfly is a baby, it is known as a dragonfly nymph. Dragon nymphs or larvae live underwater land feed off little critters, small fish and even baby tadpoles. These nymphs climb out of the water and begin to start the transformation from a larva to a dragonfly through the stage of metamorphosis.

Blue Tits

With bright feathers and a chirpy call, Blue Tits are small birds that you may be able to spot hiding in the treetops or searching for caterpillars on the forest floor. These little birds eat a variety of food, such as small insects, worms, seeds, and berries. Their signature bright yellow and blue feathers make these birds easy to spot, however, they can be a little nervous and may fly away if you startle them.
